The Four Fundamental Rules of Gun Safety

These universal rules form the foundation of safe firearm handling

Rule 1: Always treat every firearm as if it's loaded

Never assume a gun is unloaded. Always handle every firearm with the same respect and caution, regardless of its condition.

Rule 2: Never point the muzzle at anything you don't intend to destroy

Keep the gun pointed in a safe direction at all times. Be aware of what's beyond your target.

Rule 3: Keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot

Your finger should remain outside the trigger guard until you've made the decision to fire.

Rule 4: Be sure of your target and what's beyond it

Identify your target completely and be aware of the area beyond it before pulling the trigger.
