The Matsell Bridge Natural Area, spanning 1,990 acres, stands as the largest area in Linn County, rich in diverse terrain and habitat. It is a sanctuary for native Iowa wildlife and plants, benefiting from significant natural resource management efforts by Conservation staff. Named after George W. Matsell, a former New York City chief of police, the area boasts a history that includes a mansion built by Matsell, resembling George Washington's Mount Vernon. Over time, the buildings fell into disrepair and were razed, leaving only the icehouse and stone entrance pillars. Today, Matsell Bridge offers a variety of recreational activities including a shooting range, making it a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts.
A permit is required to use the shooting range.
