West Rifle Creek SWA, located in Garfield County, Colorado, is managed by Colorado Parks and Wildlife and was originally purchased for big game winter range and access to other public lands. It encompasses 941 acres of land consisting of scrub oak, mountain mahogany, sagebrush, and rabbitbrush, with a small creek enhancing the habitat for a variety of wildlife including cottontails, jackrabbits, doves, turkeys, coyotes, bobcats, deer, elk, bear, and mountain lions. The area offers hunting, fishing, camping, and has guides available.
Access requires a valid hunting or fishing license or SWA pass for those 16 or older. Public access to the designated shooting range is prohibited between sunset and sunrise. Discharge of firearms or bows is restricted to hunting or on the designated shooting range. Camping is limited to licensed hunters during big-game season, plus 3 days before and after each season. Fires are only allowed within containment structures while camping.
